Even before entering the White House for the second time, Trump was making waves in the world politics. From Panama Canal and Greenland to Ukraine-Russia conflict to offering Canada to become the 51st State with Justin Trudeau as the Governor, everything was there on the table. The world of politics has never been this exciting before. But amongst all of it, there was one thing that was very likely to happen, the tariff war, which was nothing new for the 47th US President. He kept the world on the edge ever since.

What is a tariff ?

A Tariff is a tax imposed on the foreign goods sold in a country to make them expensive to import. The announcement of 25% tariffs on the countries of China, Canada and Mexico and an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods was bound to face some retaliation. US had a trade deficit of $63.33B, $171.9B and $295.4 with Canada, Mexico and China respectively in 2024. With the exception of EU and ASEAN, these are the largest trading countries of the US. All the major countries will be impacted from Trump’s tariffs. From EU to India and Australia, all of these countries will face tariff from Trump administration.

As per the White House, these tariffs have been placed citing the national security and economic reasons. The freezing of the USAID to almost 130 foreign nations have had significant effect on the globe. Ukraine has been affected the most by this as it had received $6B in 2024 and $16B in 2023. This has also exposed the Deep State and America’s interferences in foreign nations. As per foreign news outlets, these tariffs have impacted more than 100 countries equivalent to 50% of the globe.

Threatening BRICS nations

Trump has also threatened the BRICS nations comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa as well as others with heavy tariffs if they went ahead with their idea of new currency while ditching the US Dollar. Calling India, a ‘very big abuser’ he has vowed to correct the trade imbalances. The tariff has also impacted the global stock market as well. The Wall Street along with other markets has been struggling ever since.

But Mr. Trump has forgot that America is no longer as powerful as it once was. The mask of the “Greatest nation on the Earth” have long since come off. The tariff war will not work anymore as it had earlier. The retaliation has already begun, with the US’s northern neighbor, Canada imposing retaliatory 25% tariff, while China and EU have already done so.
